Fushigi Yuugi OAV New Characters
Gyoshuku
Gyoshuku is the great-grandson of Hotohori, who
is upon the throne fifty years after the calling of Suzaku.
Gyoshuku, like his great-grandfather, finds himself surrounded by
Palace advisors and Royal guards, with no true friends. Gyoshuku
is impressed, awed, and respectful of the legends of the Suzaku
Seishi, keeping all of their holy objects in the sacred Shrine of
Suzaku. When the lonely young boy meets Tamahome of the Suzaku
Seishi tale, he is delighted at the prospect of finally having a
friend, and places all of his hope and faith in Tamahome.
Kaen
Kaen is a young woman who meets Tamahome in
Kutou Country. She serves him, calling him her Lord "Nakago", and
does things like prepare meals and take care of his clothes for
him. Kaen also practices Bouchu magic, having sexual abilities
almost like Soi’s, only not quite so polished. She loves her Lord
"Nakago", being perfectly willing to give her body to him, and
would probably sacrifice herself for his sake. Tamahome’s
misunderstanding of the situation and supposedly "lost memory"
only confuse her, and lead her to try and aid "Nakago" in his
recovery even more. Kaen does her best to serve and be loyal to
her Lord, hoping to speed his recovery, even if she doesn’t
understand him completely. In reality, Kaen is an ordinary girl
who is simply possessed by Tomo; he uses her body to interact with
Tamahome as per Tenkou’s orders.
Tenkou
Tenkou is an evil, powerful man and the King of
the Shitennou (Four Heaven Kings), who he controls and commands.
He is even more powerful than Nakago, who served him, and even
more evil. Tenkou believes he is a god, and it is his dream to
attain the ultimate power of the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho", and become
the ruler of both the book world and the real world. Tenkou is
extremely powerful, merciless, and cruel. He kills people with no
hesitation or remorse, and controls others, forcing them to
acknowledge his superior powers. Long ago, Tenkou was a prince in
Japan who was given the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" by the Emperor Tao.
Tenkou learned of the powers that the book contained, and became
completely crazed with power over the immense possibilities within
the book. Finally, Tenkou was placed under the death sentence, and
executed by having his head cut off. Tenkou's vengeful spirit
still remained, however, and continued to grow more and more
powerful. The four gods soon realized that Tenkou had to be
stopped, and so used their powers to seal him in the Pine Tree
Burial Mound. Taka's presence in the real world was twisting the
link between it and the book world; this gave Tenkou a tremendous
advantage to gain a secure hold on both worlds. Tenkou now
threatens both worlds with the possibility of becoming the ruler
and god.
Ren
Shigyou / Renhou
Ren is a new student at the high school Miaka and Yui attend. He
is a freshman and the same age as them, and is extremely popular
at school. He runs for school president against Yui, and becomes
the leader of a group of students who threaten Miaka and Taka. Ren
has the ability to control people’s minds, detesting and taking
advantage of weak people who allow him to manipulate them. He
dislikes and is jealous of the miracle that allowed Miaka and Taka
to be together. Ren is the first Shitennou for Tenkou, who aided
him in acquiring his powers and allowing him to travel between the
two worlds. Ren was originally a young man in the book world who
loved and was engaged in an incestuous relationship with his older
sister, Miiru. When the people of the town discovered the
relationship between Ren and his sister, they ganged together and
ran the couple over a cliff. Ren’s soul went to hell for his sin;
and it was here where Tenkou tempted Ren’s soul for the
possibility of living and being with Miiru again if Ren worked for
him. So, Ren accepted, and as per Tenkou’s orders, becomes the
enemy of Suzaku No Miko, Miaka, and does his best to kill her.
Miiru Kamashiro / Miisu
Miiru is a new freshman at the college Taka,
Keisuke, and Tetsuya attend. She decides to join Keisuke’s Ancient
Chinese Mythology Club, where she sees and reads some of the "Shi
Jin Ten Chi Sho". She believes Keisuke’s story about another world
inside the book, where his little sister was pulled in and became
the Suzaku No Miko. Miiru, however, is the second of the Shitennou
working for Tenkou, and has the ability to use blood to control or
harm people. She can plant parasites in the blood, or make dolls
out of blood and use them as tools for manipulating a person’s
actions. Miiru is the older sister of Ren, and like her younger
brother, was granted her powers by Tenkou and can travel between
the two worlds. Miiru was originally a resident of the book world
who was involved in an incestuous relationship with Ren. When the
secret was uncovered by the townspeople, the couple were run off a
cliff. Miiru’s soul, as her brother’s, went to hell because of her
sinfulness; there Tenkou convinced her to work for him, and he
would grant her and her brother another chance at life. Miiru,
because of her love and loyalty to her brother, agrees, and
becomes a formidable opponent against Taka and Miaka. Miiru would
do almost anything for Ren, her love for him is so overpowering.
Boushin
Boushin is the son of Hotohori and Houki; the
crown Prince and future Emperor of Konan Country. He is a lively
little boy, but because his mother entered mourning right after
his birth, he has never spoken to anyone. He is very cute, and
loves and keeps the teddy bear that Miaka gave to Hotohori before
leaving for Hokkan Country. Boushin is silent because of his
isolation from his mother, and has never learned of his father’s
love for him. It is only through the kindness of Taka that Boushin
finally learns of his father’s caring feelings towards him, and
begins to talk. Also, Boushin has within his body the third of
Taka’s memory globes, which entered him right before his birth.
Rokou Chou
Rokou is the older brother of Nuriko. He is
quite serious and very upset over his brother’s death, feeling
utterly alone in the world. As a child, Rokou was very timid and
shy, and was teased by the other children of the town. Nuriko
constantly came to Rokou’s rescue by trouncing the bullies, and so
Rokou came to depend on his brother a great deal. When Rokou
learned of Nuriko’s death, he was crushed and grew to hate the
Suzaku Seishi, who he felt took his brother away from him. Rokou
never quite got over his loss, clinging fiercely to his childhood
memories, unable to accept the death that tore him from his
brother. Unbeknownst to Rokou, he is in possession of one of
Taka’s memory globes, which was sealed in a crystal ball that was
young Nuriko’s favorite playtoy. When the Seishi come searching
for the globe, Rokou can only defend himself against them, unable
to give up the last thing that had belonged to his brother. Rokou
gradually has to find the strength to accept his sorrow and put
his mourning aside.
Hikou
Hikou is the friend of Chichiri who was killed
by Chichiri eight years previously, in the battle that gave
Chichiri his scar. Hikou was in love with Kouran, the woman who
was engaged to Chichiri. Hikou, when he learned the two had set a
wedding date, couldn’t help himself and kissed Kouran. When the
great floods came that year, Hikou and Chichiri had been fighting
over the breaking of the engagement, but Hikou fell in the water
and couldn’t swim. Chichiri, all thoughts of fighting over, was
only trying desperately to save his friend by holding onto his
hand. A jagged branch came from upstream, straight at Chichiri’s
face, tearing out his eye. In pain and shock, Chichiri let go of
Hikou’s hand, and Hikou drowned. Tenkou convinces Hikou to work
for him and kill Suzaku No Miko, becoming the third of the
Shitennou, to which Hikou agrees, and he is granted his powers. He
becomes a warrior who can manipulate rain and water, and turns
against Chichiri, preying on the latter’s guilt and sorrow. Hikou
believes that the friendship had been useless, and that all
friendships resulted in betrayal. It is only when Chichiri is able
to confront Hikou again that the full truth is learned between the
two, and an understanding finally reached.
Yosui
Yosui is the fourth of Tenkou’s Shitennou, and
by far the most evil. Yosui looks exactly like Tamahome, has
Tamahome’s memories and powers, and claims he is Tamahome. Yosui
tries to make the Suzaku Seishi befriend him and Miaka love him by
claiming that the powers of Suzaku awakened him from his long
"sleep", because the interference of Tenkou was preventing him
from uniting with Taka. Yosui then encourages Taka to return to
the real world, not desiring to have the useless "silhouette" of
himself still around with Miaka. Yosui has power over puppets; he
can string people up by stabbing them with sharp little threads.
He has all of Taka’s memory globes within him, which were given to
him by Tenkou, allowing him to claim Tamahome’s powers and
memories as well. Yosui is definitely Tenkou’s most powerful
minion, who finally sets out to get rid of Miaka, Taka, and the
world of the four gods. |
