The "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" is seemingly safely put away in the National Library, but nothing is what is seems with that book. One dark night a computer in the National Library lights up and deletes the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" from its database, and the next day it is taken of the shelf to be disposed of. However, it is dropped in the hallway by workers and a young girl picks it up. She takes it with her, but forgets it when she gets off a train. Three years pass and the girl who picked up the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" is now attending Yotsubadai high school. Her name is Mayo Sakaki and she is desperately in love with one of the coaches of her basketball team, Taka Sukanami. However, the reincarnated Suzaku warrior still only has eyes for Miaka Yuuki - and this is where the story begins. Taka and Miaka are getting married. The ceremony is beautiful, and everyone Miaka and Taka know is there, including an angry and jealous Mayo. Ironically, she is the one that catches the wedding bouquet when it is thrown.

Night falls and the happy couple walks and talks about the wonderful day, but Mayo walks alone in the night grasping the wedding bouquet, which sheds petals behind her. Clouds roll in and the rain begins to pour down, but Mayo still walks until she comes across a junk pile. Lying between battered boxes is the old red and tattered "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho". She picks up the book and takes it home with her. Once there, she opens it and the scenes from the story of Miaka as the Suzaku No Miko flash across her mind, becoming imprinted in her memory. That night she dreams of Taka (dressed as Tamahome) telling her that she, and not Miaka, is the Suzaku No Miko. As he opens his arms to embrace her, she wakes up gasping.

Some morning later, in the hallway of Yotsubadai High, Keisuke Yuuki (the other coach for the basketball team) tells members of the team that Miaka is pregnant. She is three months along and so it is a honeymoon baby. However, there is one person not overjoyed by the news. Mayo walks out of the hallway sullenly, ignoring the calls of her best friend Saori. Worried about Mayo, Keisuke follows her and catches up to her at a bus stop. One the bus, Keisuke asks Mayo if she is angry about not being a starter on the basketball team. He goes on to talk about her potential, but Mayo turns away and rudely informs him that he can never understand her. In response, Keisuke quietly asks if Taka is the only one that can understand her, which startles Mayo. He explains that Saori described her unrequited feelings for Taka, but while he talks, Mayo slips off the bus at the next stop.

Concerned, Keisuke follows Mayo into a park and looks for her among the trees and shrubs. Mayo calls out to Keisuke and tells him to stop following her. Keisuke continues to call out for her worriedly, when Mayo finally emerges from behind a tree above him. She asks him coyly if he’s really that interested in her or if he is more interested in the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho"; and holds it up for him to see. Keisuke shouts warnings to her about how dangerous the book is, but Mayo will not listen. She is obsessed with Taka and thinks that if she goes into the book, he will come to her and fall in love with her. Still ignoring the loud shouts from Keisuke, Mayo opens the book. She is enveloped in a red whirlwind of light. Keisuke leaps toward her and manages to grab a piece of her school uniform before she disappears completely. But, as soon as Mayo enters the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho", Miaka collapses onto the floor of her apartment.

A wasteland is what greets Mayo in the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho". As she rises to her feet, Miaka’s wedding ring appears on her finger and a red light illuminates her abdomen. She is found by soldiers and taken to the royal palace. There she meets Houki and Boushin, and while they ask her questions, Mayo cramps over and a red light once again shines around her abdomen. The light is taken for the red light of Suzaku, and Mayo is made the Suzaku No Miko.

At a hospital in Tokyo, Miaka remains unconscious and there is no sign that she was ever pregnant. Keisuke stands in the hall with Taka and pulls out the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" from his bag. Taka stares at the book in surprise, and is even more incredulous when Keisuke explains what happened with Mayo. Keisuke has been reading the book and informs Taka that Mayo has been in love with him for three years, Mayo was made the new Suzaku no Miko, the Konan desert is spreading and destroying the land, and that Mayo seems to be pregnant in the book as well. After digesting all this information, Taka feels like he is to blame for what has happened. He decides that he must go into the book and undo what has been done. As Yui and Tetsuya rush into Miaka’s room in worry, all that is there to greet them is Miaka’s prone body and Keisuke. Keisuke quietly says, "He’s gone back inside" as he holds the book.

Taka appears at the crumbling shrine of Suzaku and is spotted by Houki. He is taken to Boushin, and as he asks what has befallen Konan; Mayo runs out and embraces him. Taka is irate at her actions, but as Mayo spits out her twisted version of reality, he doesn’t say anything. Then the red light surrounds Mayo’s abdomen again. It seems that Mayo has led Houki and Boushin to believe that she is Taka’s wife and she is also carrying the baby that was Miaka's. However, to help Boushin and save Konan, Taka agrees to search for the warriors of Suzaku so Suzaku can be summoned. And so the quest begins.
