Taka Sukunami
A
very mature but still cheap Taka is portrayed in this third OAV.
He has finally married the girl of his dreams, Miaka Yuuki, but
then has to face the chance of losing all he has gained. His
wonderful wife suddenly becomes unconscious and then loses all
trace of the child they had made together. He learns that a
basketball player he had coached has traveled into the book world
in order to lure him to her, and could be behind all this
misfortune. Instead of standing idly or becoming alarmingly angry,
Taka takes thoughtful action and ventures back into the "Shi Jin
Ten Chi Sho" in order to recover his child and the girl. However,
once there he sees the destruction on Konan taking place, and so
agrees to help save it as well. Moreover, he completes all of his
quests with grace and composure.
Miaka Sukunami
Although
very important to the plot, Miaka does not have a huge role in
this OAV. However, in the scenes she does appear in, she still
exudes love, warmth, and energy. Now a married woman, Miaka is
preparing for the arrival of her first child. She still thinks
about the other Suzaku warriors every day and knows that they are
all watching down on her from the heavens above. The most
important things in her life are still her family and friends, and
she still will do everything in her power to help and protect
them.
Mayo Sakaki
At
first Mayo will only appear to be a girl with a HUGE jealousy
problem. She has a deep and unrequited love for one of her
basketball coaches (Taka) and is horrendously angry when he
marries Miaka. Her jealousy leads her to use the "Shi Jin Ten Chi
Sho" to lure Taka to her. She believes that once she goes into the
book, the story will repeat and Taka will fall in love with her
and not Miaka. However, this is not the case and she tries to end
her time in Konan through suicide. It is in her emotional state
that we learn the true reason behind all her destructive behavior:
it is because of her parents' divorce. The rift between her
parents hurt her deeply, and her only comfort during this time was
her basketball coach, Taka. Occupying her time with her love for
him gave her something else to think about. In the end, the
vulnerable and lonely girl within Mayo is exposed and she is able
to heal.
Tasuki
Tasuki
is still a jokester, but continues to exude the maturity he gained
in the second OAV. During the course the story, Tasuki has to deal
with a crying baby, a light-fingered little girl, and a jumpy
little boy. However, through the whole thing he never once “goes
mental” and flames anyone randomly. He actually displays a decent
aptitude for child-care. Tasuki is also still fiercely loyal to
his fellow Suzaku warriors and tries to make them feel better with
his sarcastic banter (a/n thanks to Sylvia for the term “goes
mental”).
Chichiri
The
first thing that you notice about Chichiri is that he has become a
lot more powerful. His spell casting and teleportation abilities
have greatly increased. However, the inner turmoil and
investigation of his character that takes place in the second OAV
is absent here. Chichiri is once again the wise monk in a mask
that we first met in the original anime.
Keisuke Yuuki
Keisuke
is the other coach for the Yotsubadai Basketball team. However, I
also believe he is some kind of teacher as well. Keisuke is still
the extremely nice guy he has always been. Worried about the
distant way Mayo had been acting lately, he follows her in order
to talk. But, he only sees her disappear in a whirlwind of red
light into the same book that once held his sister. During the
course of the book's action, Keisuke resumes his role as narrator
and reads what is happening in the book aloud to Tetsuya and Yui.
Yui Hongo and Tetsuya Kajiwara
Both
Yui and Tetsuya are older, wiser, and happy together. Yui
continues to possess the peaceful and strong interior she acquired
through her hardships and revelations in the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho",
and remains Miaka’s best friend. Tetsuya is still very protective
of Yui and cares for her very much. Although he is now very much
experienced on the legend of the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho", Tetsuya is
still slower than Keisuke on grasping certain
situations/conclusions. But, he remains as the calm one of the two
(in my opinion anyway).
Saori Kawai
Saori
is Mayo’s best friend. She is a timid girl until you get her to
open up to you. Saori is always there for Mayo and is one of the
only people who truly understands what is at the root of Mayo’s
problems.
Houki (a.k.a. Youtaikou)
Houki
is now the Dowager Empress of Konan since her son has taken the
throne. (a/n Youtaikou roughly translates to the title of
"Dowager Empress" and this is what Houki is called in the
Japanese-language version of the OAV). She has a quiet strength
and kindness about her that was not completely noticeable before.
She is a wonderful advisor to her son and tries to understand what
is truly behind the negative feelings in Mayo’s heart.
Boushin (a.k.a. Reizeitei)
Boushin
is now the Emperor of Konan and is trying his hardest to live up
to his father’s legacy. Although very young, Boushin displays
great strength and integrity during the course of the OAV. Already
shouldered with the burden of trying to save his country from
devastation, Boushin’s only option is to turn to the new Suzaku No
Miko for help. (a/n Reizeitei is the formal name of Boushin
that is used in the Japanese language version of the OAV).
Gakurei Cho
Gakurei
is the reincarnation of Chiriko. He is the first warrior found by
Taka, Tasuki, and Chichiri. Although Gakurei still possess all the
wisdom and knowledge that Chiriko had, he is losing his former
memories as he gets older.
Reishun Ko
Reishun
is the reincarnation of our favorite cross-dresser! She is an
impish little girl that unfortunately has no memories of being a
former Suzaku warrior. However, she does share many traits that
Nuriko possessed. For example, she is headstrong, tricky, and
enamored with a young boy that happens to be Hotohori reborn.
Eian Shu
Eian
is the reincarnation of Hotohori. He is a solemn little boy who
brings fresh flowers to the Shu family graves (they are not
related to his Shu name however). He is the last one to regain his
memories.
Chosei Jo
Chosei
is Mitsukake reincarnated. He’s a spunky boy that has a white
kitten for a playmate and is extremely protective of his neighbor
(a young girl named Shouka).
Tendou Shu
Tendou
was Houki’s first love. Although he grew up a poor peasant boy,
Tendou is really the older brother of Hotohori. At first Tendou is
enraged by the fact that Houki chooses Hotohori over him, but in
the end wishes the couple happiness and dies at peace.
