Fushigi Yuugi OAVs
The OAVs (Original Animated
Videos) of Fushigi Yuugi cover Volumes 14 - 18 of the manga story,
as well as some of the storyline after the manga's conclusion. Yuu
Watase wrote and finished the original Fushigi Yuugi story in
manga volumes 1 -13, but due to the incredible popularity and
demand for the series, when the original story ended, Watase's
editor strongly encouraged her to continue the series. So, Watase
came up with a brand new plot, containing different themes, to
star her characters in.
The manga story was brought to life in the TV animation for
Fushigi Yuugi, which took the original 13-Volume manga series and
animated it. It was decided, however, that the entire Fushigi
Yuugi story should be animated - including Part II of the manga.
This second Fushigi Yuugi story became the animated OAVs.
Due to the dropoff in the timelapse between manga volume 13 and
manga volume 14, an "in-between" OAV was created to ease the
transition. This became the first OAV for Fushigi Yuugi, with
three episodes that stand alone from the manga story. This story
does not appear at all in the manga series, but was created simply
by the animators for the mere reason of simplifying the gap in the
story.
The second OAV begins with manga volume 14, and continues Yuu
Watase's Fushigi Yuugi story. This OAV II contains six episodes,
covering the remaining story published in the final four volumes.
Finally, a third OAV series was released, based on two Gaiden
(novels) that continue the storyline of Fushigi Yuugi after the
manga. These two novels, titled "Eikou Den" ("Eternal Light
Legend") produced this third OAV series of the same name, which
featured another four brand-new episodes.
