Taiitsu-kun
Taiitsu-kun is the all-powerful, all-knowing overseer of the
world within the book. She is an ugly old woman, but very kind
and wise, and serves as a benefactor to Miaka and her Seishi.
Taiitsu-kun lives on Mount Taikyoku, a magical mountain in the
center of the world, that only the Seishi and Miko can travel
to because of their powers. To all others, it is a mere
mountain covered with rocks. Taiitsu-kun is very ancient; she
was the one who gave each of the countries their copy of the
"Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" long, long ago. Taiitsu-kun is very wise
and generous with her knowledge, willing to share it with
those she trusts and believes will use it for good purposes.
She is extremely powerful and can use her magic in many ways,
although her preferred source is through mirrors. Taiitsu-kun
instructs Miaka and the Seishi with her wisdom, aiding them in
their quest and encouraging them to never give up.
Nyan Nyan
Nyan Nyan is/are the helpful little spirits that work for
Taiitsu-kun. They take the forms of cute little girls, who are
a little mischievous but eager and willing to help others.
Their job is to heal and restore with their powers. They can,
in their eagerness to help, be a little over-enthusiastic, in
which case they do get smacked around a little. Overall, they
are the excited little helpers that follow Taiitsu-kun’s
orders and aid her.

Keisuke is Miaka’s older brother. He is a college student and
is majoring in ancient Chinese philosophy. When Miaka first
tells Keisuke her story of being pulled into a book, he
doesn’t believe her and warns her against returning to the
library. Later, Keisuke follows Miaka to the library and
watches her be re-absorbed into the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho". He
then picks up the book and begins reading, following along as
the stories of Miaka and Yui unfold. Keisuke is as cheerful
and outgoing as his sister is, and is very close to and
protective of Miaka. His main concern becomes returning both
Miaka and Yui to the real world, as well as uncovering the
mysteries surrounding the past of the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho".
He also has a more bashful side to him, and when he meets the
famed Tamahome of the ancient Chinese tale, he becomes best
friends with him. Tamahome is Keisuke’s hero; he admires and
looks up to the protector of his sister.
Tetsuya Kajiwara
Birthdate: September 21
Age: 20
Height: 179 cm (5’10")
Blood Type: B
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown
Tetsuya is the best friend of Keisuke Yuuki. He meets Keisuke
at the library, and because he refuses to stop annoying him,
is eventually told the story that Keisuke’s little sister was
pulled into a book. Tetsuya becomes the reader of the "Shi Jin
Ten Chi Sho", while Keisuke busies himself doing research of
the religion of the Four Gods and finding out the book’s past.
Tetsuya is a fun guy who is rarely serious, but he is very
concerned about his best friend and eager to help Keisuke get
Miaka and Yui out of the book and into the real world. Tetsuya
constantly wears a pair of sunglasses over his eyes, to
emphasize his coolness, which he is never shown without.
Chuei Sou
Chuei is the oldest of Tamahome’s younger siblings. He looks
up to his older brother a lot, and during Tamahome’s absences
from home, he is the master of the household, taking care of
his father, younger sisters and brother. Chuei runs the farm,
making sure the fields are plowed, sown, and looked after. He
also manages the money his older brother brings home to the
family, making sure to spend it wisely only on necessary
things. Chuei resembles a younger Tamahome very much, with
long blue hair and grey eyes. Chuei is a noble young boy, who
does his best to look after his family and take Tamahome’s
place while he is away.
Yuiren Sou
Yuiren is Tamahome’s youngest sister. She is very small, cute,
and innocent, and loves her oldest brother with all of her
heart. It was shortly after Yuiren’s birth that Tamahome’s
mother died, so Tamahome raised Yuiren himself. Yuiren is very
sweet, and as a child, naturally curious and open. She calls
Miaka "Neechan", and instantly picks Miaka out as a bride for
her "Niichan". She makes little bridal gifts for Miaka, who
she also loves very much, and wants nothing more than for
Tamahome to come home to stay, and be with her always.
Emperor of Kutou
The Emperor of Kutou is a domineering, self-satisfied man who
craves power and military strength. He is prejudiced against
different races of people, and because of his discrimination,
the Country of Kutou is in a state of constant unrest. He does
not concern himself with peace or better politics; instead,
the Emperor thinks only of his own pleasures. Though the
Emperor puts on a facade of courage and control, in reality he
is very weak and cowardly. He especially enjoys spending his
time engaged in sexual intercourse, and is a social pervert.
Also, the Emperor is a little too assured of Nakago’s loyalty
to him.
Koji
Koji is nineteen years old, Tasuki’s absolutely best friend,
and the leader of the Mount Leikaku bandits after Tasuki
leaves to protect Suzaku No Miko, Miaka. Koji possesses a
sharp attitude, as well as a straight and noble character, and
is loyal to his friends. Koji has a very funny habit of
knocking on a door, answering it himself, and then carrying on
an entire conversation that way. Koji is also an excellent
fighter, particularly good at swordsmanship. Koji is almost
like a brother to Tasuki, the two are such good friends; and
Koji would stick with and help Tasuki through all crises.
Eiken
Eiken is a member of the Mount Leikaku bandits, who steals
Genrou’s position as leader while Genrou is away. The bandits’
former leader had died, and Eiken stole the treasured Tessen,
using it as a sign of his power and authority over the other
bandits, who had no choice but to follow. Eiken is very fat,
ugly, and has a Lolita Complex (a sexual obsession with young
girls). Naturally, when Miaka and the others travel to Mount
Leikaku, Eiken detains them and tries to have his way with
Miaka. Fortunately, Genrou returns from his travels, and with
the help of Koji and Miaka, overthrows the nasty Eiken.
Shoka
Shoka is the daughter of a landlord in the village of Souen,
near Choko, in northern Konan. She is the lover of Myojuan,
but fell ill while he was away doctoring in other villages,
and died before he could return to cure her disease. Shoka’s
body was taken over right before her death by the evil demon,
Shikkonki. This gave her the power to raise the dead, and she
lived on as a very well-preserved zombie. Later, when Shoka
began struggling with the demon inside of her, the people she
supposedly had raised also became zombies under her power.
When Miaka and the Suzaku Seishi informed Myojuan of Shoka’s
presence, he came out of hiding and exorcised the demon, and
finally Shoka was able to rest in peace.
Tama
Tama is a cat and Mitsukake’s pet. For a time, Tama was
Mitsukake’s sole companion, before Miaka and the others met
him. Tama is very cute, and he enjoys to follow and play with
Miaka and all of the Seishi. Naturally, Tama loves and is
loyal to all of his friends. Also, he has been known to mimic
and imitate people; with impersonations that are nothing less
than impressive.
Shifan
Shifan is the adopted daughter of the two Byakko Seishi,
Tokaki and Subaru. Her father died a year previously, and she
was taken in by the elderly couple. She is a good daughter to
them, respecting their wishes and taking their helpful advice
to her. Coincidentally, Shifan resembles Miaka, only with long
dark blue hair and blue eyes. She is an excellent cook, and
knowledgeable of the local folklore of Bakan village in Sailo
Country. During the visit of the Suzaku Seishi at her home,
Shifan’s adopted father Tokaki told her to comfort and be
friendly to Tamahome, helping him to forget his love for
Suzaku No Miko, Miaka. Being a good, obedient daughter, she
does so, and as a result, is not on very good terms with Miaka.
Toki
Toki is a monk and the adopted grandson of Suzuno Oosugi, who
takes care of her in her old age. Toki never believed Suzuno’s
crazy stories about being pulled into a book and becoming the
Byakko No Miko. Keisuke and Tetsuya arrive at the temple where
Toki lives, and Toki is startled to discover that Suzuno’s
story was, in fact, the truth, after hearing that Keisuke’s
sister was the current Miko in the book. Toki helps to answer
some of Keisuke’s and Tetsuya’s questions about the book,
unraveling some of the book’s mysterious past. Toki helps
Tetsuya read and research the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" after
Keisuke leaves to help Miaka.
Houki
Houki is the wife of Hotohori and the Empress of Konan
Country. Hotohori married Houki sometime in between Miaka and
the other Seishi leaving for Hokkan and returning from Sailo.
Houki is very kind and gentle, and loves Hotohori with all of
her heart. Supposedly, Hotohori met Houki after feeling a
blast of Chi from Nuriko’s death, and believed that Nuriko had
brought them together. Houki looks almost exactly like Nuriko,
so that the first time Miaka sees her, she mistakes Houki for
Nuriko and immediately rushes to hug her. Later, Houki becomes
pregnant with Hotohori’s child.
